Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if we're the right fit?

While it is my hope that we establish a great rapport from the initial phone consultation, that may not always be the case. It takes time to build trust and establish a fruitful working relationship. It is normal and appropriate to be wary of revealing your closely held thoughts, fears, and concerns to another person. I encourage you to “listen to your gut” here. You won’t hurt my feelings if you choose not to schedule an appointment.

If I can encourage you on one point it would be this: “Be patient.” Invest the time to find the right person for you, and don’t give up if the first experience doesn’t resonate with you. Therapy is different with each clinician.

Why don't you accept insurance?

Unfortunately, insurance companies require you to be assigned a diagnosis in order to reimburse for your treatment. They also put limitations on the types of interventions they approve, the length of time they will cover treatment, and more. This results in decreased flexibility and personalization of your care.

However, I recognize that this limitation can reduce access to therapy for some people, which is a very important consideration to me. I believe that therapy should be accessible to everyone, and so I offer a few slots at a sliding scale fee, as well as perform some pro bono work to offset this.

If I don’t have any sliding scale slots available, I would be happy to refer you to another clinician who may.

What is a typical session like?

The beauty of therapy is the creative range it can fill. Some sessions will be primarily talking and sharing; having a nonjudgmental witness to your story can be such a powerful tool.

Sometimes I will validate, challenge, or nudge you to deepen a given thought. Other times we may use metaphor, prompts, or activities to gain understanding. Depending on your interest, comfort level, and therapeutic discretion, those activities may employ writing, music, movement, art, games, etc.

What is your fee and availability?

Sessions last 50 minutes and cost $130 per session. I offer a few sliding scale spots based on availability.

I offer sessions from morning to early evening on weekdays.

How often will we meet?

Based on my experience, I encourage clients to start weekly in order to establish the relationship and determine the best course of action to meet your goals. That said, there are some reasons we may prefer to use a bi-weekly or monthly cadence, and we can certainly address that as we get a sense of our rhythm.

How long will we work together?

Our collaboration can last anywhere from a few months to a year, to several years, all depending on the extent of the things you’d like to address. Generally speaking, the decision to end services is a mutual one based on progress towards your goal(s), but of course you are always free to end services at any time. For your benefit, I simply ask that we have a final closing session to wrap up our time together.

How do I get started?

You can contact me via phone or email using the “Contact” page. We’ll start with a 15 minute phone or video consultation to ensure that we are a good fit. If we both decide to work together, you will complete some paperwork through a secure online portal. Finally, we schedule our first session, either by phone, email, or through my secure online calendar.
